Musical Dissonance or Purposeful Chaos?

Musical Dissonance or Purposeful Chaos?

I had been listening to some amateurish Middle Eastern electronic music borrowed from the public library which set some bellydancing rhythms to breakbeats and drum patterns. The results were far from stellar, prompting me to post my disdain for a lot of dissonant music which strikes me as lazy rather than artistic. A chat conversation soon followed with fellow musician and music producer Mark Redito (aka Spazzkid) of MyParasol who reminded me that some of it is done on purpose and we ought not to judge. Here is the edited transcript:

The Trick to Translating

The Trick to Translating

In the past few months, whenever I’ve been able to grab a few minutes, I’ve worked on some Filipino songs for Acid42. Things I’ve realized: composing lyrics and music in Filipino is pure gut feel. You create using your gut and the end result usually comes out strangely honest. You can’t hide behind fancy twists [...]

For those of us closely interested in the future of internet and culture in general, the book The Cult of the Amateur by Andrew Keen is riveting reading most of the way through. Keen tackles how the democratization of the Net is producing tons of crap on a daily basis and slowly killing off the [...]

Watch “Puwang” at the Katorse Shorts Film Fest

Katorse Shorts poster In 2006, I did the musical score for an independent short film entitled “Puwang” by filmmaker and editor Annabelle “Sunshine” Matutina. It’s a 30-minute short film about a family coming together to take care of their dying father in a hospital. And I was asked to make music that was minimalist and [...]

Art Now: Do Something With What You Have

“So what kind of computer do I need to make electronic music?” “So what kind of investment do I need to make in gear in order to perform live?” I get asked questions like this all the time. Partly because I’ve been doing this for some time now, (and by this, I mean, create, release [...]

Acid42 in Stuff Magazine: Aug 2005

So, a few months back, an editor friend emailed me asking if he could interview me via email for the cover story he was doing on Stuff Magazine Philippines’ August 2005 issue. He wanted me to talk about mp3s, QED Records and the future of music. I was game. Answered all the questions, (rather lengthily), [...]

Electronic Mass of Light in G-Major

I have always loved the Catholic Mass. Always. Even when, for a while, I was subjected to celebrant priests who obviously lacked charisma and communication skills and I ventured to other churches and other faiths to simply find where I belonged. I ended up back with the massively historical and tradition-filled Catholicism I grew up [...]

IN YOUR CAPACITY: Manifesto of a Christian electronica musician

1. Each of us is being called to serve in his or her capacity. Which means I’m not being asked to give up my knowledge and skill in producing electronic music in favor of more traditional pop- and folk-styled praise music. Rather, I am being called to use what I have and what I know [...]

Playing at the Launch of “The MET”

The event was a success. On the basis of sheer attendance alone, not to mention the audience feedback. People loved the show, and they loved the idea even more. I played an electronic jazz set for over 2 hours. What happened was this: the Metropolitan Theater Guild (the Met for short) staged three little excerpts [...]

Nerisa's Spoken Word Album

My poet friend Nerisa del Carmen Guevarra whom I got to know back when I was a session musician for Grace Nono and Bob Aves, decided sometime last year to throw caution to the wind and produce a book of her own poetry with an accompanying CD of the poems set to music. The idea [...]
